Can A.I. Help Casinos Cut Down on Problem Gambling?

Since launching in 2018, Mindway has contracted its services to seven Danish operators, two in Germany and the Netherlands, one global operator and one US sports-gambling operator, Mr. Kjærgaard said. According to the companies’ annual reports, online gambling giants Flutter Entertainment and Entertainment have also partnered with Mindway.

Since the technology is so new and no regulatory body makes a standard setting, companies like Mindway and others are currently, essentially, on their own. “We want to be able to tell you, anyone else – the operators, obviously – that not only do we provide this science-based software, but we also want to have a third party to verify the validity of what we do,” he said. “Mr. Kjærgaard said. “But the paradox is that there are no specific requirements that I can ask my team to fulfill.”

Currently, Mindway’s technology is largely in online gambling. Operators connect Mindway’s gamescanner system to their portal, and analyze not only individual risks, but total risks to the system. It is more difficult to apply that level of supervision to individual gambling.

An example of a measure of success can be found in Macau. Casino operators there use hidden cameras and facial recognition technology to track gambling betting behavior, as well as poker chips enabled with radio-frequency-identification technology and sensors on the backrate table. This data then goes to the central database where players’ performance is tracked and monitored for interplay player collusion.

This, Mr. Kjærgaard said there is a future: financial incentives will lead to success. Efforts to address “smart tables” and money laundering and financial regulations could ultimately provide data that would supercharge AI’s application for individual gambling.

(It also highlights another difficulty in implementing AI in gambling: cultural differences. In Chinese casinos, Ms. Aberbenel said, players are used to this level of supervision; not in the United States.)

AI will definitely work for casinos when it comes to marketing, promotion and game-suggestion, Mr. Feldman said, but despite progress in recent years, he remains skeptical about its use to help problem gamblers. Such a tool could be better used individually rather than widely, he believes, “your costs are 25 percent higher than last month” reminders that pop up in online banking accounts.
