Hayden Blackman, the longtime head of Hangar 13, is stepping down from his role and leaving 2K. It’s a big change for the studio that makes Mafia games for the 2K label of Take-Two Interactive.

Hanger 13 Brighton’s studio head Nick Bains will take over as the new head of the studio in the United Kingdom, 2K announced.

Former LucasArts game creator, Blackman launched Hangar 13 in 2014 in Novato, California. Blackman’s team oversaw the creation of the acclaimed title Mafia III. It was a buggy game, but I liked the story. The studio also released a remake of the original Mafia trilogy. As it expanded, Hanger 13 opened a new studio location in Brighton, England in 2018.

Here is the internal communication issued by 2K.

Hello team

It is with mixed feelings that I share with you many of the Hanger 13 leadership updates.

Hayden Blackman is stepping down as studio head of Hanger 13, and leaving the company to further his passion for the new venture. We are grateful to Hayden for his leadership in establishing Hangar 13, forming and uniting teams in Novato, Brighton and Czech, and releasing multiple studio-defined Mafia games and collections. What helped Head build will continue to grow and grow over the years to come. We support all our employees in pursuing their passion, and in what lies ahead we want nothing but the best for them.

Nick Bains, Studio Head of Hanger 13 Brighton, will take over as Studio Head of Hangar 13. With 30 years of industry leadership experience, Nick Hanger 13 joined Hanger 13 in 2018 to establish Brighton, and has spent the last four years developing the team, building studio capabilities, and launching tremendous projects like Mafia: Definitive Edition and Mafia Trilogy.

I hope you join me in thanking Hayden and wishing him the best and congratulating Nick for the proper promotion. While change can be challenging, it can also foster new opportunities and success.

We are confident that the studio is moving forward with multiple ongoing projects and that the team has the full support of 2K.
