January was a big month for hardware sales in the United States, according to industry-tracking firm The NPD Group. And it was a particularly good month for Sony’s and Microsoft’s elusive new-generation systems. Those companies were able to replenish the stock of PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X / S systems, and that led to the outselling of those devices Nintendo Switch.
“The PlayStation 5 was the best-selling hardware platform in January 2022 in both units and dollars,” said NPD analyst Matt Pisketella. “The Xbox series ranks second in both steps.”
Overall, hardware sales in January were higher than at any time in the last decade.
“Video game hardware dollar sales rose 22% to $ 390 million compared to January 2021,” Pisketella said. “This is the highest total for the month of January after reaching કુલ 447 million in January 2009.”

Look at the demand
As always, supply hinders hardware sales. Sony and Microsoft are selling every PS5 and Xbox they can make. The switch also continues to fly off the shelves. And it is possible that these new, more expensive consoles will break records if manufacturing can sustain demand.
