When the big news comes on the weekends, and it’s always fun when I’m asleep. I’m not arrogant – it means that when I wake up and remove my phone from Do Not Disturb I get a rush of interesting messages. In this case, the printable news is the purchase of Square Enix’s Western studios by Embracer Group, which includes Crystal Dynamics and Edos-Montreal. It effectively bought offspring of late Eidos and all its IP. These include Tomb Rider, Thief, Deuce X and Legacy of Cain.

Do you know? I’m not crazy about it. If that means we have a chance to get a new thief or a new Deuce X, I would personally benefit from this acquisition. I suspect Embracer will buy a game franchise with Tomb Rider’s name identification without the intention of throwing money into the new game project. I’ll be happy to get it Any It’s a new game in the franchise, and we already know that a new Tomb Rider is on the way. My part wonders if IP was the carrot that brought the embosser into the deal.

Speaking of recognizable franchises, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake has shifted back to Ubisoft’s Montreal office. It is a pity to see it out of the hands of studios in Pune and Mumbai – especially since they have first hand knowledge of the game’s location and semi-historical context. We have to see how far this development sets: it is already pretty much delayed.

In other news, I have now started working through my backlog that I have finally completed my review of Chinatown Detective Agency. The May release period is a bit slow, so I can watch games that I haven’t played yet. I have yet to finish Kirby, and I haven’t been able to touch the new Siberian game that came out a few weeks ago. I can also try the track to Yomi. We have plenty of time before Geoff Kegley’s Note-E3-Stravaganza starts in June.
