Mina the Hollower is a Game Boy throwback with a modern feel

Mina The Hollover is a new game from Shovel Night Developer Yacht Club Games. It’s a throwback to game boy color classics like The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons, and it has gorgeous, stylistic visuals to draw homage to. The Yacht Club has launched Kickstarter as part of an effort to build an early support community for Meena. The campaign has already raised about $ 1 million and has about two weeks left with the goal of delivering the project by December 2023. I’ve spent some time with the demo version of Mina, and he’s definitely excited about me as a person who likes Shovel Knight.

The first thing I noticed is that visuals are more effective when you’re playing. Unlike Shovel Knight’s NES-style graphics, Mina the Hollower obviously couldn’t run on the actual Game Boy color hardware. Instead, it borrows from the aesthetic while also filling some space. For example, the Yacht Club is focusing more on animation.

For me, however, the best part of playing Mina is controlling the titular mouse. You can activate its ability to hollow by holding the jump. This will immerse you underground in the pool of his Gold Dublins in Ducktails like Scrooge McDuck. Meena then gains satisfactory momentum while hollowing out before jumping back to the ground with high and fast jumps.

Hollowing is both a platforming and combat tactic. Of course, it helps you to cover huge distances. But it also enables you to avoid the most aggressive attacks of enemies.

The team is giving a lot of love and care to Meena between now and December 2023. But if it reaches its 1.2 million target, the studio is also planning additional phishing mini-games. But even if it turns out to be as it is now, the foundation is already strong. I can’t wait for the full game.
