While most IT security professionals experienced an increase in their workload last year, the main reasons were the rapid adoption of cloud infrastructure and consistently high rates of cyber attacks, according to a new report by Confluira. The results of the survey also indicate that the adoption of cloud services is a major cause of security concern for IT security professionals.

According to Confluira, 66% of IT professionals surveyed said that adopting the cloud was the biggest contributor to increasing their IT security workload. The process of adopting cloud services gained momentum as organizations changed their strategies in 2021 to support longer and more permanent and virtual workforce support.

The majority of IT security professionals (97%) who responded to the survey confirmed that their cloud strategy includes the expansion of cloud deployment. Cloud deployment is not only expanding on a scale, but it is also expanding on platforms like AWS, Google Cloud and Azure. The results are consistent with the growing trend of adopting multi-cloud services to support the diverse needs of the organization.

IT professionals have identified cyber security concerns as a major challenge for adopting the common cloud as well as multicloud. About 63% of IT professionals name cyberthreats as a top barrier to adopting cloud services designed to target cloud services. Similarly, 69% of IT professionals identified the need for continuous security coverage across all cloud infrastructure as the biggest barrier to multicloud adoption.

As organizations accelerate their cloud adoption process and expand their strategies to accommodate multicloud, cyber security exposure can and will act as a monkey in their plans. The ever-increasing probe into false alarms and the resulting alerts puts fatigue at the top, and organizations can easily find themselves with the need to constantly innovate but are unable to do so due to security implications.

In December 2021, Confluira commissioned an independent research firm to survey 200 US IT professionals using a national network of tested panel providers. The margin of error for this study is +/- 5.9% at 95% confidence level.
