The last few years have seen incredible growth in “smart” devices, including the expanding IoT universe, such as security cameras, gaming platforms, TVs, appliances, doorbells and more. However, according to a new report from SAM Seamless Network, these devices are increasingly becoming an attack vector for individuals and businesses. The company reported more than a billion attacks in 2021; More than 900 million of them were IoT-related.

In fact, of those studied, 50% of home and micro business networks experienced attacks or suspicious network traffic behavior in 2021, including DDoS, Brute Force Attack, Phishing and DPI policy-based attacks. In addition, researchers found growing activity from the Mirai and Mozi malware families. Perhaps the most surprising result was which devices were most susceptible to attack. Routers accounted for 46% of all attacks analyzed, according to the report. Other common vulnerabilities include extender and mesh (17%), access points (17%), NAS (5%), VoIP (4%), camera (3%) and smart home device (3%).

The sheer volume of IoT-based attacks can be attributed to a number of factors. For one, the IoT ecosystem has a general lack of security, especially for consumers or micro-businesses who are unaware of the risks of these devices. In addition, the IoT ecosystem is very diverse between OEM and operating systems, which can often lead to a fragmented approach to security updates (if done at all).

There is also a significant trend to see the growing activity of Mirai and Mozi. We’ve seen a variety of infamous Mirai botnets regularly targeting IoT devices since 2016 and we continue to see it targeting IoT devices and home routers. In 2021, we Mirai and Mozi Botnets continued to add significant new capabilities and expanded their attack scope to target additional devices.

The report is based on data collected from 132 million active IoT devices and 730,000 secure networks, which were kept anonymous for the purpose of the report.
