Report: U.S. is top target of phishing attacks worldwide

The U.S. is targeted by more phishing attacks than any other country in the world, according to a new report by Outsider, which investigated 56,000 cyber attacks during the third quarter of last year.

The report found a significant increase in phishing attacks targeting the US during the third quarter of 2021, up 43% from Q2.

Out of the 56,000 attacks detected by Outsier in its network during the third quarter, 14 percent were phishing attacks, meaning it detected 7,840 phishing attacks during that time.

Top fishing target countries: US at 21%, Spain at 14%, South Africa at 12%, Philippines at 9%, Greece at 7%, Canada and the Netherlands both at 6%, China at 4%, India And Japan is at 3%, and all other combined at 15%.

Outsider defines a phishing attack as a cyber attack that is used to inadvertently steal end users’ personal information under false pretenses, either via email, phone or text message.

VentureBeat has previously reported on how enterprise technical decision makers are fighting the epidemic of such attacks, partly due to the shift to remote work and the industry’s lack of IT talent.

Jan. The Outsider 19 report also found that the US is the top hosting country for phishing attacks, accounting for 73% of Internet service providers hosting such attacks.

“This is largely due to a handful of large-scale hosting authorities, whose sheer scale can make fraudulent activity undetectable,” the report said.

The report found that, even in the spread of phishing, brand abuse attacks – where fraudsters pretend to be a legitimate company (or its officials) in order to get someone to click on a link or leave sensitive information – spread more quickly.

The third quarter of 2021 saw a 274% increase in brand abuse attacks compared to the same period in 2020.

“Whether it’s phishing or brand abuse, training employees to resist such attacks is a good start, but it’s not enough,” said Armen Nazarian, Outsider’s chief identity officer. “Humans are inherently incompetent, and even a discerning employee can be the victim of a well-engineered scam. For this reason, the enterprise needs a technical solution to catch the mistakes that people make. “
