I was really upset when the sci-fi channel (now SyFy) was canceled Mystery Science Theater 3000, I got this show in 1997, but within a few years it left an impression on me. When MST3k writers and artists took their discussion-over-a-bad-movie formula to the internet with refractrex, I followed it. In many ways, the audio track format works better for popular, modern movies. But RiffTrax really got into its own when it started getting rights to movies that it could distribute on its own. And that’s the strength it carries in RiffTrax: The Game.

Developer Wide Wright Interactive understood what he was doing when he originally released What The Dub. In that game the players viewed public domain clips and were then tasked with filling in the blanks in the audio with funny lines. The text-to-speech boat will then bring the players’ jokes to life. It’s an idea that brings instant gratification M.S.T3k in mind. But for the real game, it’s the one that works better with RiffTrax.

And so that’s what WideRight created with RiffTrax: The Game. The game all builds correctly on the concepts of What The Dub. It has more clips – many of which come from RiftRax’s library. It also has a lot of professional jokes that are universally hilarious. And it unlocks the potential of new game modes that make it so much easier for anyone to enjoy.

A party game that makes everyone feel at ease

I’ve spent a handful of hours with RiffTrax: The Game so far, and it’s always fun. Write A Riff mode looks strong due to the thousands of clips included with the basic game. And Wide Right has done an excellent job of selecting some wonder segments from RiffTrax movies to promote players’ creativity.

There’s something addictive about trying to make your friends laugh, and RiffTrax: The Game captures it. When I feel trembling, trembling, trembling, trembling, trembling, trembling, trembling, trembling, trembling, trembling, trembling, trembling, trembling. And you get another chance to do something funny.

I think this setup empowers people to present their best jokes, but this game can’t catch your foot in the comedy fire. If you are struggling but still want to participate, you can make fun of one of the RiffTrax writers and stars. Before playing the game, I wasn’t sure if it would work. But these experienced bad-movie-watching veterans almost always get the most laughter.

Mike Nelson, Bill Corbett and Kevin Murphy all do the riffs themselves, and their delivery really adds a ton to the experience. That’s why Pick A Riff mode is just as fun and practical as Write A Riff. In this mode, players handle random jokes. You can then play it as you wish on the clip. This turns RiffTrax into something like Cards Against Humanity and like that game, it can make anyone feel funny.

I will always have RiffTrax installed for my livestreams

RiffTrax also includes all the functionality you want as a livestreamer. You can enable your community to vote for their favorite jokes in live chat. This means that even if not everyone can play, they can participate. Also, this game is a fun change of pace from anything else you’re playing. Because of that, I plan to have it ready to open or close streams on my drive.

But don’t think that you can enjoy this game only if you are a streamer. It works perfectly if you throw it on the TV when you have friends. And like a jackbox or what the dub, you control everything from the phone. So the barrier to entry is low.

A good game that should keep getting better

This is what I wanted from the interactive RiffTrax experience. That’s great when a familiar clip arrives – I got one from Shake Hands with Danger last night.

It’s thrilling to watch these movies for yourself. I also love listening to brand new jokes from Mike, Bill and Kevin. And at $ 10, he can have the most fun with your group of people.

And as good as it is now, it should keep getting better as Wide Wright and RiftRax release updates with more clips and jokes. I’m going to check in regularly, but I’ll be back the first day whenever new stuff arrives.

RiffTrax: The game is now available for $ 10 on consoles and PCs. Wide Right Interactive has provided GamesBeat with review code for the purpose of this review.
