Streaming in 2021 looked a lot like streaming in 2020

GamesBeat Summit 2022 returns April 26-28 with its biggest event for gaming leaders. Reserve your place here!

According to RainMaker.gg, analytics partner of StreamElements, the popularity of online streaming has not diminished in 2021. In fact, comparing 2021 data with 2020 items seems very similar.

The number of Twitch viewers increased towards the end of 2020, surpassing the 2 billion mark for the first time between December 2020 and January 2021. In the last year it has risen and fallen every month in total. In December 2021, in January 2022, the line of 2 billion viewers increased.

Facebook gaming, on the other hand, saw steady growth. The service was seen around 300 million viewer hours for most of the year, before reaching around 400 million in January 2021. For the rest of 2021, Facebook gaming continued to increase the number of views viewed, breaking the last 600 million hours viewed in January. 2022.

Top games on stream

One of the most watched games in 2021 is the biggest up and down swing swing rust. Rust topped the charts in 2020, but fell sharply below 2021. At the very last moment, Rust came back on top thanks to the new Enabled Twitch drops and new updates. The Sandbox Survival game was watched only 6.7 million hours in December 2021, but increased to more than 63 million in January.

The rest of the list is kind of familiar, except for spectators losing interest in some games and picking up some new favorites. In addition to Rust, the League of Legends, Grand Theft Auto V, Escape from Tarkov, Fortnight, Minecraft and FIFA all topped the list.

Valerant and Apex Legends replaced Counter Strike: Global Offensive and Call of Duty: Warzone, but most of the top games remained top games.

Top streamers

It’s the same story with Twitch’s top streamers. Well ahead competition is xQc. It saw 25 million hours in January 2021, and January 2022 saw a slight decrease. AuronPlay, TheGrefg, HasanAbi and Ibai joined xQc in late 2020 and were half of the top 10 places in 2021.

As of late 2020 and early 2021, the popularity of Spanish-speaking streamers has grown. AuronPlay, TheGrefg, Ibai, Elxokas, IlloJuan, and JuansGuarnizo account for the majority of the top 10 in terms of viewer hours, and all speak either Spanish or Spanish.

This past year has felt like a holding pattern, and last year in streaming is no exception. If the Covid-19 and chip shortages keep people stuck inside for the rest of 2022, next year’s figures could look the same as this year’s.

And last year.
