These plastic batteries could help store renewable energy on the grid

Some research points to $ 20 per kilowatt-hour of storage as a long-term goal that will help us adopt 100% renewable energy. It is a landmark that other alternative grid-storage batteries focus on. PolyJoule probably won’t get that low cost, Pasteur admits. It currently targets પ્રથમ 65 per kilowatt-hour storage for its first systems, as industrial customers and power utilities may be willing to pay that price because products should last longer and be easier and cheaper to maintain.

So far, Pasteur says, the company has focused on creating a technology that is easy to manufacture. It employs water-based manufacturing chemistry and uses commercially available machines to assemble its battery cells, so it sometimes does not require the special conditions required in battery production.

It is still unclear what battery chemistry will win in grid storage. But PolyJoule’s plastic means a new alternative has emerged.
